Your privacy is paramount. Quinary does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data beyond what Apple provides through standard analytics and crash reporting services.

No Account Required: You don't need to create an account or provide any personal information to use Quinary.
Local Data Only: Your game progress, statistics, and settings are stored locally on your device and synced via iCloud if you have it enabled.
Apple Analytics: We use Apple's standard analytics to understand app performance and crashes. This data is anonymized and managed by Apple according to their privacy policies.
No Third-Party Tracking: We do not use any third-party analytics, advertising networks, or tracking services.
iCloud Sync: If you enable iCloud on your phone, your game data syncs across your devices using Apple's secure iCloud infrastructure. We never have access to this data.

📖 How to Play

The Goal

Guess the five-letter word in 6 attempts or fewer. Each guess must be a valid US English word.

Understanding Tile Colors

Note that colours will vary between themes. You can find a legend at the top of the game board.

Green (Correct): The letter is in the word and in the correct position.
Yellow (Present): The letter is in the word but in the wrong position.
Gray (Absent): The letter is not in the word at all.

Word Rarity System

Each word is tagged with its usage frequency, helping you gauge difficulty:

Ubiquitous - Most common words (200-247 frequency)
Common - Frequently used words (150-199)
Standard - Standard vocabulary (100-149)
Uncommon - Less common words (50-99)
Hapax - Uncommon or archaic words (0-49)

💡 Strategy Tip: Start with words containing common vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and frequent consonants (R, S, T, L, N) to maximize information from your first guess.

🎮 Game Modes

Daily Global Challenge

Join players worldwide in solving the same word each day. The daily word resets at midnight in your local time zone. Your statistics track your performance across all daily challenges, including win percentage, current streak, and longest streak.

Practice Mode

Play unlimited games anytime. Practice mode uses the same word pool as daily challenges but lets you play as many times as you want. Perfect for:

Developing your solving strategy
Learning new vocabulary
Playing while waiting for tomorrow's daily word
Improving your guess distribution

Hard Mode

Enable Hard Mode in Settings for an additional challenge. In Hard Mode:

Any revealed correct letters (green) must be used in the same position in subsequent guesses
Any revealed present letters (yellow) must be included somewhere in subsequent guesses
Hard Mode can be toggled before starting each game
Hard Mode wins are tracked separately in statistics

iCloud Sync

Your game progress, statistics, and achievements automatically sync across all your devices via iCloud. Start a game on your iPhone during your commute, continue on your iPad at home, and check your stats on your Mac - all seamlessly synchronized.

💡 Note: Ensure iCloud is enabled on all your devices in System Settings for sync to work properly.

Accessibility

Quinary includes Colorblind Mode, which adds distinct patterns to tiles in addition to colors:

Correct (Green): Solid fill
Present (Yellow): Diagonal stripes
Absent (Gray): Dotted pattern

Enable Colorblind Mode in Settings → Appearance.

Keyboard Support

On devices with physical keyboards (iPad with keyboard, Mac), you can type letters directly, press Enter to submit, and use Backspace/Delete to remove letters. This makes for faster gameplay and a more natural experience.

Starting Words

Choose opening words with common letters and multiple vowels:

ADIEU - Contains 4 vowels
STARE - Common consonants and vowels
AROSE - Frequently occurring letters
LATER - Good vowel and consonant mix

Letter Frequency

Most common letters in English (in order):

E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R

Least common: Q, J, X, Z

Pattern Recognition

Common letter pairs: TH, ER, ON, AN, RE, HE, IN, ED
Common endings: -ED, -ER, -LY, -ING (though -ING won't fit in 5 letters)
Double letters are less common but important: LL, EE, SS, OO, TT

Hard Mode Strategy

In Hard Mode, you must strategically plan ahead:

Before guessing, verify your word uses all required letters
Try different positions for yellow letters systematically
Consider which positions are most likely for certain letters
Don't waste guesses testing letters you've already ruled out

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What time does the daily word reset?

The daily word resets at midnight in your device's local time zone. This means the word may be different for players in different time zones until everyone's day has rolled over.

Can I play previous days' words?

No, you can only play the current day's word in Daily mode. However, Practice mode gives you unlimited access to words from the same pool, so you can keep playing as much as you want.

How does the streak system work?

Your streak increases by 1 each consecutive day you win the daily challenge. Missing a day or losing breaks your current streak, but your maximum streak is preserved. Streaks only count daily challenges, not practice games.

What words are in the word list?

Quinary uses a curated list of valid five-letter English words, prioritizing common vocabulary while including some challenging obscure words. The word list includes proper nouns minimally and focuses on standard dictionary words.

Why was my word rejected?

If you see "Not in word list," the word you entered isn't in our dictionary. This could be because it's too obscure, a proper noun, slang, or a variant spelling. Try a more common word.

How do I restore my purchase on a new device?

If you purchased premium features, go to Settings → Store Options → Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used for the original purchase.

My statistics aren't syncing between devices

Ensure iCloud is enabled on all your devices and you're signed in with the same Apple ID. Statistics sync may take a few moments. If issues persist, check your iCloud storage isn't full and that Quinary has iCloud permissions in System Settings.

Can I share my results?

Yes! After completing a daily challenge, tap the Share button to create a shareable grid showing your guesses without spoiling the word. This uses colored emoji squares that look great in messages and social media.

What does the asterisk (*) mean in shared results?

The asterisk indicates the game was won in Hard Mode, showing others you completed the challenge with additional constraints.

🔧 Troubleshooting

Game Not Loading

Ensure you have an active internet connection for initial word download
Try force-quitting and reopening the app
Check for app updates in the App Store
Restart your device

Statistics Not Updating

Complete the game (win or lose) - stats update after the final guess
Check iCloud settings if playing across multiple devices
Verify you're playing the Daily challenge (practice games have separate tracking)

Theme Not Applying

Disable "Random Daily Theme" if you want to keep a specific theme
Try selecting the theme again in Settings
Force quit and reopen the app

Keyboard Not Working

Try tapping directly on the on-screen keyboard instead
On iPad/Mac, ensure keyboard focus is on the game
Check if a physical keyboard is properly connected

Can't Complete a Word

Tap "Clear Row" to reset your current guess
Tap any letter in your current guess to backspace to that position
Remember in Hard Mode you must reuse revealed letters
