Tiny Journal does not collect, store, or transmit your journal entries. Your data stays on your device. However, when you use the AI Language Review feature, your text is sent directly to your chosen AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or OpenRouter). Please review your AI provider's privacy policy and terms of service to understand how they handle your data.
🤖 Setting Up AI Language Review
The AI Language Review feature helps you improve your language skills by providing feedback on your writing. Here's how to set it up:
Step 1: Choose Your AI Provider
Tiny Journal supports four AI providers. Choose the one that works best for you. Note that Gemini and OpenRouter have free tiers that allow API Key creation. While the others require a paid account to create API Keys.
Step 2: Get Your API Key
1Visit your chosen provider's website (links above)
2Create an account or sign in
3Navigate to the API Keys section
4Create a new API key and copy it
Step 3: Enable in Tiny Journal
1Open Tiny Journal and go to Settings
2Unlock Premium (required for AI features)
3Scroll to AI Language Review section
4Toggle Language Review ON
5Select your AI Provider from the dropdown
6Paste your API Key in the secure field and tap "Done"
Step 4: Use AI Language Review
1Write your journal entry for the day
2Scroll to the AI Language Review section
3In the text field, explain what you were trying to say in your own words
4Tap Get Review
5Review the corrections, feedback, and encouragement provided. If the AI fails to detect your target language correct, mention the language in your intent
✨ Other Features
Daily Reminders
Enable daily reminders in Settings to receive a notification at 12:00 PM each day to write your entry. If you've already written for the day, the reminder will be scheduled for the next day. If you do not make an entry, no further reminders will be scheduled until you write again.
Themes (Premium)
Choose from multiple beautiful themes:
- Pastel themes (Blue, Pink, Green, Purple, Orange)
- Paper Journal (Light & Dark)
- Terminal themes (Green, Amber, White)
- High Contrast (accessibility)
Statistics
Track your journaling progress with:
- Current and longest streak
- Total entries
- Weekly completion rate
- Monthly progress
Import & Export (Premium)
Import or export all your journal entries as plain text. Go to Settings → Export → Export All to learn the schema. Settings → Export → Import All to import entries from a properly formatted text file. Note that it will Clear any existing entries.
🔧 Troubleshooting
AI Review says "Invalid API Key"
- Double-check that you copied the entire API key
- Verify the key is active in your provider's console
- Ensure you've selected the correct provider that matches your API key
AI Review takes too long or doesn't respond
- Check your internet connection
- Verify your API key has available credits/quota
- Try again in a few moments
Can't access Premium features
- Go to Settings → Store Options
- Tap "Restore Purchases" if you've already purchased
- Contact support if issues persist

How much does the AI feature cost?
The AI Language Review requires both Tiny Journal Premium and your own AI provider API key. API costs vary by provider but are typically very low for personal use (often $0.001-0.01 per review). Most have a free tier that Tiny Journal would never exceed for casual journaling.
Is my journal data secure?
Your journal entries are stored locally on your device only. When you use AI Review, only the text you submit is sent to your chosen AI provider. We recommend reviewing your provider's privacy policy.
Can I use the app without AI features?
Absolutely! The core journaling features (writing, history, stats, reminders) work perfectly without any AI setup. AI Language Review is completely optional.
Which AI provider should I choose?
All providers offer quality feedback. OpenAI (GPT-4o-mini) is widely used, Anthropic (Claude) is known for nuanced responses, Google (Gemini) offers generous free tiers, and OpenRouter provides access to multiple models. Try the one with the best pricing/credits for you. OpenRouter and Google Gemini have free tiers that allow API Key creation.
